The US leader stated on Wednesday night that he had signed the bill resoundingly passed by US legislators that directs the Department of Justice to disclose more documents concerning Jeffrey Epstein, the dead sex offender.
This decision follows weeks of pushback from the leader and his supporters in the legislature that fractured his core constituency and caused divisions with various established backers.
The president had opposed releasing the related records, labeling the situation a "hoax" and criticizing those who sought to release the documents public, even though pledging their release on the election circuit.
Nevertheless he reversed course in recent days after it became apparent the legislative chamber would pass the legislation. Donald Trump commented: "There are no secrets".
It's not clear what the agency will make public in as a result of the measure – the measure specifies a host of potential items that need to be disclosed, but allows exclusions for certain documents.
The measure requires the attorney general to make public Epstein-related files open for review "in a searchable and downloadable format", encompassing each examination into Epstein, his colleague his accomplice, travel documentation and travel records, people cited or listed in connection with his crimes, institutions that were connected with his human trafficking or economic systems, exemption arrangements and additional legal settlements, official correspondence about charging decisions, evidence of his confinement and passing, and information about potential document destruction.
The department will have thirty days to submit the documents. The bill includes certain exemptions, such as redactions of personal details of victims or private records, any depictions of minor exploitation, publications that would endanger active investigations or legal cases and depictions of fatality or mistreatment.
