The offspring of ex- South African Head of State Jacob G Zuma has entered a not guilty plea to terrorism-related allegations at the commencement of her legal proceedings in the coastal city of Durban.

Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, forty-three, is being tried over remarks she posted on online platforms in the past during violent demonstrations in South Africa that came after the arrest of her dad.

A week of chaos in several parts of the country in July 2021, including plundering and fire-setting, resulted in at least 300 individuals killed and resulted in damage worth an approximate $2.8bn (£2.2 billion).

She has been alleged of inciting this unrest and faces charges of encouragement to commit terrorism and public disorder.

Context of the Case

The unrest were centered in the areas of Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal province and came after the former president's apprehension for defying a legal directive to give evidence at an probe into accusations of graft while he was in power.

The defendant has always refuted the charges against her, with her attorney earlier labelling the state's evidence as weak.

She has also frequently claimed the charges against her were an effort to resolve political scores with her dad after he started his own party and competed against the African National Congress.

Endorsement and Case Arguments

This was supported by the foundation, which said the legal matter was an "misuse of authority" and a "organized effort" of "political and familial persecution" against the previous head of state and his kin.

A handful of followers from her party, her party, gathered outside the judicial building, while her dad and other organization officials were present at the hearings inside.

The defense has maintained that the proof presented by government lawyers is inadequate and does not have substantial proof for a guilty verdict.

Key Points of the Trial

  • Social media statements from 2019 form the basis of the state's argument
  • Fatal protests in recent years resulted in significant fatalities and economic losses
  • The accused is charged with multiple allegations of encouragement to violence
  • Court hearings are expected to continue for numerous court sessions

The legal proceedings continues as both sides present their arguments before the court in what is expected to be a closely watched legal battle with significant policy implications for South Africa.
