Democratic officials expressed anger after Donald Trump charged a group of Democratic legislators of being "turncoats" and asserted they should be taken into custody and penalized "through capital punishment" following their publication of a controversial video.
The video footage, released on Tuesday, includes six Democratic elected officials who formerly worked in armed forces or defense roles.
"As we did, you all made an oath to protect and defend this national charter," the officials affirmed in the short video. "Currently, the risks to our governing document aren't just from abroad, but from right here at home. Our regulations are explicit, you can decline unlawful commands, you can reject illegal orders, you should decline illegal orders. No one has to execute directives that break the law or our founding principles."
The recorded statement seemed to provoke a heated reply from the ex-president.
On the following morning, Trump posted on Truth Social: "This constitutes SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these betrayers to our Country should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In another post, he stated: "This represents really concerning, and Harmful to our Nation. Their comments cannot be allowed to stand. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a subsequent publication, he continued: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, punishable by DEATH!" He also reposted a declaration that stated: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Following Trump's remarks on that day, House Democratic leader published a joint statement censuring the remarks.
"Partisan aggression has no place in this nation," they declared. "Congress members who appeared in the video all served our nation with exceptional patriotism and distinction. We strongly condemn Donald Trump's offensive and risky death threats against elected officials, and call on House Republicans to forcefully do the same."
The opposition officials also stated that they had been in contact with security officials "to ensure the safety of these officials and their relatives."
"Donald Trump must without delay remove these unhinged social media posts and recant his aggressive rhetoric before he leads to violence," the statement added.
The lawmakers who participated in the video also issued a statement.
"We serve as veterans and security experts who love this country and took an vow to protect and uphold the national charter of the United States," they stated. "That oath is permanent, and we aim to honor it. No intimidation, pressure, or call for violence will deter us from that fundamental responsibility."
"The significant point is that the president considers it punishable by execution for us to repeat the law," they added. "Armed forces members should know that we have their protection as they fulfill their pledge to the national charter and obligation to follow only proper directives. It is not only the right thing to do, but also our obligation."
They continued: "The entire nation must unite and denounce the ex-president's requests for our murder and political violence. This is a period for ethical certainty."
The Democratic Senate minority leader also condemned Trump's remarks and shared on digital platforms: "Let's be crystal clear: the President of the United States is demanding the execution of public representatives."
He added: "This represents an outright THREAT. Every Senator, every Representative, all citizens – irrespective of political affiliation – should censure this right away and unconditionally."
The GOP leader supported Trump's claim that the Democrats had been involved in "rebellion", labeling the video as "highly unsuitable", adding: "This represents very dangerous, you have leading members of the legislature instructing soldiers to ignore directives, I think that is without precedent in American history."
The GOP official also reportedly stated to the press that in what he examined of Trump's messages, Trump was "describing the offense of rebellion" but that "legal experts have to examine the wording and determine all that."
During a executive branch meeting on Thursday afternoon, when asked by a journalist, "Would the president want to execute elected officials?", the White House press secretary replied: "Certainly not."
"Let's be clear about what the ex-commander in chief is reacting to," the official stated. "There are sitting members of the federal government who conspired to orchestrate a video message to personnel of the national defense, to active duty service members urging them to ignore the president's lawful orders."
She said: "The purity of our defense system depends on the hierarchy, and if that structure is compromised, it can cause people getting killed, it can cause chaos, and that is exactly what these elected officials ... are basically encouraging."
