One female individual is now in police custody following medical gas supplies were allegedly sabotaged at two Sydney-area hospitals.
The Sutherland medical facility in southern Sydney lost critical gas supplies on Tuesday morning, forcing staff to transition to portable oxygen and air as an emergency measure, as stated by health officials.
"The cause behind the disruption to gas systems is alleged to be intentional interference," authorities declared.
Officials stressed that "{To allegedly do this is beyond serious. The potential for disastrous outcomes."
NSW police confirmed receiving reports of "alleged vandalism at multiple medical facilities in the Caringbah area." It's understood that the second location was a nearby private hospital.
Police alleged a 42-year-old woman gained access of a hospital on Kareena Road premises at approximately 12:20 AM on Tuesday morning and "severed utility lines, before activating emergency water systems."
Investigators additionally claim that at approximately 1:30 AM, "the woman entered the grounds of a second medical facility on Kareena Road ... and allegedly switched off the gas main."
The individual was apprehended in the Miranda area at about 4:00 AM on Tuesday for breach of bail, according to police.
Health officials stated that medical gas supplies were returned to operation by medical staff and local health district "in about two hours time."
"Let me reassure the public there was no impact to patient care and that the facility has resumed normal operations according to standard procedures," officials announced.
Officials further noted that "Access to utility systems in NSW public hospitals is restricted. We will review the situation to see what improvements can be implemented."
Officials revealed that the suspect reportedly scaled a wall at Sutherland hospital and gained access to a restricted area.
