House of Representatives Preparing for Critical Decision on Concluding Record-Breaking Funding Crisis

A spending plan that would end the most extended federal closure in the nation's history is heading to the House of Representatives for a crucial vote on Wednesday.

On day 43 of the legislative standoff, congressional members are reassembling in Washington to vote on whether to approve a Senate package that would finance public services for 60 days.

Majority party officials voiced optimism the budget proposal would pass through the lower chamber, despite their narrow majority. But top Democrats promised to vote against it.

"We're restoring our country," he announced on yesterday at a patriotic gathering in Arlington, Virginia. "Should have never been shut down."

Effects of the Shutdown

The shutdown, which commenced on the first of October, has left a government employees without pay, suspended food stamps for low-income Americans, and slowed air travel for passengers ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday.

The procedural committee advanced the bill in a procedural party-line vote by a margin of four in the early hours of Wednesday morning, ending a seven-hour session.

Majority party representatives rejected Democratic amendments seeking to extend ending healthcare support - their primary requirement during the impasse.

The House is set to gather again at the afternoon session (21:00 GMT) to conduct sixty minutes of discussion on the proposal before a decision.

Minority Position

Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries of his constituency vowed to fight the proposal.

"We firmly object as the minority party to this careless majority action to continue to raise the high cost of living on ordinary citizens," he stated to CNN.

The minority representative has expressed frustration with Democratic senators who supported Republicans on the night before to endorse the budget proposal.

Major Points

A key condition of Democrats during the closure has been that GOP lawmakers include in the budget legislation a provision to prolong tax credits that make medical coverage less expensive for 24 million Americans.

But the majority party remained cohesive and declined to compromise, agreeing only to allow a decision before year-end on the insurance support, a proposal they had made earlier.

And there is uncertainty that legislation will get through the second legislative body, while the presiding officer has yet to commit a vote on the subsidies in that chamber.

Legislative Mathematics

The Speaker has avoided convening the chamber for nearly two months to increase leverage against opposition senators to settle the impasse.

Ahead of the decisive decision he will swear in the incoming legislator the newly elected official, a member of the opposition who won a special election in September.

Both major parties appears to have emerged without damage from this congressional crisis.

Public opinion research show citizens feel the majority party bear somewhat greater of the culpability, while the opposition were bitterly split by the legislative gamesmanship.

And once the shutdown is over, funding legislators have merely eight weeks to prevent the next one.

Public financing would then be scheduled to end on January 30th.
