The most severe projected effects of the climate crisis for the UK have been outlined by scientists, encompassing a searing 4C increase in temperatures to a 2-metre rise in sea levels. Another scenario envisions a decline of 6C in temperatures following the collapse of crucial Atlantic Ocean currents, which would massively disrupt food production and power requirements.

Credible Outcomes, Not Predictions

These impacts, certain ones are linked to irreversible climate shifts, are viewed as improbable but possible. The team said that these models addressed a shortfall in planning that had rendered the UK not ready for worst-case results.

"The worst-case scenarios we have detailed should not be seen as certainties, but they are plausible," stated Nigel Arnell who directed the analysis. "The UK has been formulating policy in the absence of the frameworks to assess extreme possibilities. We've now provided policymakers what they need to prepare for climate outcomes they pray never occur, but dare not dismiss."

A Suite of Severe Conditions Scenarios

A second set of worst-case scenarios details the potential extent of harsh climate between now and the close of the 2100s. These suggest that temperatures could soar in certain periods by up to 6C above historical levels, while precipitation could be three times typical amounts.

The likelihood of the worst-case outcomes happening could not be calculated due to uncertainty about what action will be implemented to combat global heating and how the climate system will behave. This research was compared to security threat evaluations or scenario planning for the banking sector.

Major Outcome Elements

  • Severe Heating: Global temperatures rising well above 4C by 2100 could happen if emissions cuts breaks down or if powerful amplifying effects such as the Amazon rainforest dying release its huge repository of carbon.
