The nation's Semeru volcano, the highest peak on the island of Java, has exploded, covering multiple communities with falling ash, leading to evacuations and causing officials to elevate the warning to the highest level.
The mountain in the province of East Java released blistering plumes of fiery ash and a combination of stone, molten rock, and gases that travelled up to 7km down its sides several times from midday to dusk, while a dense plume of fiery clouds rose 1.2 miles into the air, as stated by Indonesia’s Geology Agency.
The eruptions that unfolded throughout the day forced authorities to increase the volcano’s alert level twice, from the third-highest level to the highest, the authority reported. No deaths or injuries have been announced.
More than 300 residents in the three communities most endangered in the district of Lumajang region were evacuated to government shelters, according to a representative for the national emergency management body.
He stated that heightened volcanic movements of the mountain on Wednesday afternoon led officials to widen the danger zone to 8km from the crater. Residents were urged to keep away from an zone along the Kobokan River, which is the path of the molten rock stream, as searing gas flowed down the volcano's sides.
Videos on social media showed a dense cloud of volcanic dust sweeping through a forested valley to a river beneath a bridge. Locals, some with faces smeared with volcanic dust and water, escaped to temporary shelters or left for other safe areas.
Local media reported that emergency teams were struggling to save about 178 individuals stranded on the 3,676-metre peak at the Ranu Kumbolo monitoring post. The party comprised 137 climbers, 15 porters, seven escorts and six tourism officials, according to an spokesperson with the protected area.
“They remain secure at the Ranu Kumbolo station,” a spokesperson stated in a video statement. He noted the station was situated 2.8 miles from the summit on the northern slope of the mountain, which is outside the trajectory of the hot cloud flow that was seen moving to the southeast direction. Bad weather and rain forced the team to remain overnight there, he explained.
The volcano, also known as Great Mountain, has burst numerous times in the last two centuries. Still, as is the situation with numerous of the 129 active volcanoes in the archipelago, tens of thousands of people continue to reside on its fertile slopes.
Semeru’s last major eruption was in late 2021, when 51 individuals were lost their lives and hundreds others were injured and villages were buried in layers of mud. The event led to the evacuation of more than 10,000 people from their homes.
Indonesia, an archipelago of over 280 million inhabitants, sits along the Pacific “ring of fire”, a horseshoe-shaped series of tectonic boundaries, and is susceptible to seismic events and volcanism.
