In the past, the England assistant coach competed at a lower division club. Currently, he is focused to assist Thomas Tuchel win the World Cup next summer. His path from player to coach started through volunteering for Accrington's Under-16s. He remembers, “It was in the evenings, third of a pitch, asked to do 11 v 11 … flat balls, not enough bibs,” and he fell in love with it. He realized his purpose.
His advancement has been remarkable. Starting in a senior role at Wigan, he developed a name for innovative drills and excellent people skills. His club career led him to Chelsea and Bayern Munich, while also serving in roles with national teams across multiple countries. He's coached stars like top footballers. Today, as part of Team England, it’s full-time, the “pinnacle” in his words.
“Dreams are the starting point … Yet I'm convinced that passion overcomes challenges. You dream big but then you bring it down: ‘How can we achieve it, gradually?’ Our goal is the World Cup. However, vision doesn't suffice. It's essential to develop a systematic approach that allows us for optimal success.”
Dedication, focusing on tiny aspects, is central to his philosophy. Toiling around the clock all the time, they both test boundaries. The approach feature mental assessments, a plan for hot conditions ahead of the tournament in North America, and creating a unified squad. Barry emphasizes “Team England” and rejects terms like “international break”.
“This isn't a vacation or a break,” he explains. “We had to build something where players are eager to join and, secondly, they feel so stretched that going back is a relief.”
He characterizes himself along with the manager as “very greedy”. “We aim to control all parts of the match,” Barry affirms. “We want to conquer every metre of the pitch and we dedicate most of our time to. We must to not only anticipate of the trends and to lead and innovate. This is continuous focused on finding solutions. And to simplify complexity.
“We get 50 days alongside the squad ahead of the tournament. We must implement a complex game that offers a strategic upper hand and we must clarify it in that period. It’s to take it from concept to details to understanding to action.
“To create a system enabling productivity in that window, we must utilize the whole 500 we’ll have had since we took the job. In the time we don’t have the players, we have to build relationships with them. We have to spend time communicating regularly, observing them live, sense their presence. Relying only on those 50 days, it's impossible.”
He is getting ready ahead of the concluding matches in the qualifying campaign – versus Serbia in London and in Albania. They've already ensured their place at the finals after six consecutive victories with perfect defensive records. But there will be no easing off; instead. This is the time to reinforce the team’s identity, for further momentum.
“The manager and I agree that our playing approach should represent everything that is good of English football,” Barry says. “The fitness, the flexibility, the robustness, the honesty. The national team shirt must be difficult to earn but light to wear. It must resemble a cloak instead of heavy armour.
“For it to feel easy, we have to give them an approach that enables them to play freely like they do every week, that resonates with them and allows them to take the handbrake off. They should overthink less and more in doing.
“You can gain psychological edges for managers in the first and final thirds – starting moves deep, attacking high up. But in the middle area of the pitch, those 24 metres, it seems football is static, notably in domestic leagues. All teams are well-prepared these days. They understand tactics – mid-blocks, deep blocks. We are focusing to speed up play through midfield.”
The coach's thirst for development is relentless. While training for the top coaching badge, he had concerns regarding the final talk, since his group included stars like Lampard and Carrick. To enhance his abilities, he went into tough situations imaginable to improve his talks. One was HMP Walton in Liverpool, where he also took inmates during an exercise.
He earned his license in 2020 at the top of the class, with his thesis – focusing on set-pieces, where he studied thousands of throw-ins – became a published work. Lampard included convinced and he recruited the coach to his team with the Blues. When Frank was fired, it said plenty that the team dismissed virtually all of his coaches except Barry.
His replacement with the club took over, and shortly after, they claimed the Champions League. After Tuchel's exit, the coach continued under Graham Potter. But when Tuchel re-emerged in Germany, he recruited Barry away from London to rejoin him. The FA view them as a partnership like previous management pairs.
