Waymo's Autonomous Taxis Planned for London Streets Starting 2026.

The US-based firm Waymo has revealed that its driverless taxis will be available for use on London's streets beginning next year.

UK Capital Named as Leading European City for Autonomous Ride-Hailing.

The UK capital will become the pioneering European city to launch an autonomous taxi service, akin to those already familiar in multiple US cities and several American cities employing Waymo's innovative systems.

Preliminary Operations to Begin with Trained Operators.

Waymo stated that its vehicles are presently en route to London and will start driving on the capital's roads in the near future with experienced operators supervising the vehicles.

Waymo – initially established as a derivative from Google's autonomous vehicle initiative and belonging to the same parent group – stated it would scale up activities and collaborate with the Department for Transport and London's transport agency to obtain the required permissions to provide fully autonomous services by 2026.

Expanding Interest in Self-Driving Mobility Across London.

Further companies, such as Uber and the UK-based technology firm Wayve, have likewise declared their own intentions to trial autonomous vehicles in the city next year.

This is in response to the UK authorities confirming it would fast-track guidelines permitting public testing to take place before laws supporting self-driving vehicles becomes law in full.

A fuller rollout of driverless cabs is projected in the UK after the new law is fully implemented in the latter part of 2027.

Waymo already has ties to Britain after establishing its pioneering European technical center in Oxford in 2019.

The company is also introducing operations in Tokyo using JLR EVs, marking its only other present project outside the US.

“Evidence confirms how to effectively grow totally self-driving transport solutions, and we can’t wait to bring the advantages of our systems to the Britain,” said the company executive, noting that the system was “enhancing transport security and travel more available”.

Waymo introduced its driverless cabs in 2020 and currently reports it has transported over a vast number of riders in the United States.

Despite some concerning occurrences, Waymo indicated that statistics revealed that vehicles operated by humans were linked to crashes that injured people on foot significantly more frequently than its driverless cars.
